Tile flooring is noted for simplicity, practicality, and decorative value.  Some varieties of tile flooring date back thousands of years, and some have sprung more recently out of local cottage industries to gain world renowned status.  With each selection of tile flooring come benefits that add visual appeal and functional value to flooring projects of a wide variety of types.

PORCELIAN TILE

Porcelain tiles mostly consist of refined white (or light tan) clay and sand. These tile are pressure treated and subjected to high kiln temperatures. therefore Porcelain tiles are very hard and need specialized equipment for cutting. However, these tiles can take a lot of wear and tear in high traffic areas. Since they are so dense, porcelain tiles are less likely to absord moisture. Becuase of this they are very frost resistant. For the same reason they are also highly stainproof.

CERAMIC TILE

Ceramic tiles consist of red, brown, and white clay. They are also kiln fired, but not at such high temperatures as porcelain tiles. Because ceramic tiles are porous, many ceramic tiles are glazed in order to minimize water absorbtion. Glazed ceramic tiles are very durable. The type of glazing is important as some tiles are too slippery for floors and should rather be used for walls. Grade III and higher glazing makes ceramic tiles highly resistant to scrathing and moisture.
